TUNKU Ibrahim membaca watikah pemasyhuran baginda sebagai Sultan Johor di Istana Besar, Johor Bahru.

Almarhum Sultan Iskandar dimakam penuh istiadat

JOHOR BAHRU: Sultan Ibrahim Ismail dimasyhurkan sebagai Sultan Johor kelima di Istana Besar di sini, semalam, menggantikan ayahandanya, Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail yang mangkat di Hospital Pakar Puteri, kelmarin.

Pelantikan Sultan Ibrahim Ismail dilakukan mengikut Fasal 8 Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Johor 1895 sebagai Sultan dan Yang Dipertuan Negeri Johor Darul Takzim dan Jajahan Takluknya.

Pengumuman pemasyhuran Sultan Ibrahim Ismail dilakukan Menteri Besar, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman pada kira-kira jam 1.35 petang di tangga besar istana berkenaan sebelum keranda jenazah Almarhum Sultan Iskandar dibawa turun dari Balai Singgahsana ke Pedati Diraja untuk ditarik menuju Makam Diraja Bukit Mahmoodiah.

Sebelum itu, pada jam 10.15 pagi, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail yang dilantik sebagai Pemangku Raja petang kelmarin, mengangkat sumpah sebagai Sultan Johor kelima di hadapan Abdul Ghani, barisan Exco kerajaan negeri dan jemaah pangkuan negeri.

Abdul Ghani membaca watikah pelantikan Sultan Johor yang mengesahkan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail sebagai Sultan Johor.

JENAZAH Almarhum Sultan Iskandar dibawa dari Istana Besar dengan penuh adat istiadat untuk disemadikan di Makam Diraja Mahmoodiah Johor Bahru (gambar kiri) manakala (kanan) Sultanah Johor, Sultanah Zanariah mengesat air mata ketika istiadat pemakaman, semalam.

"Menurut Fasal 8, Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Negeri Johor 1895, disahkan bahawa waris Sultan Johor, Tuanku Ibrahim Ismail dimasyhurkan sebagai raja dan Sultan Johor Darul Takzim dan jajah negerinya di bawah undang-undang tubuh kerajaan negeri," katanya.

Sebaik Abdul Ghani selesai membaca watikah pelantikan itu, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail kemudian mengangkat sumpah sebagai Sultan Johor kelima dengan membaca lafaz sumpah pelantikan Sultan Johor.

Baginda yang dilihat sebak dan sedih ketika membaca watikah pelantikan bersumpah akan memerintah dengan adil, saksama dan bertimbang rasa pada semua rakyat tidak mengira bangsa serta agama.

"Saya, Ibrahim Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar menaiki takhta menjadi Sultan Yang Dipertuan Negeri Johor Darul Takzim dan Jajahan Takluknya. Saya bersumpah akan memerintah dengan adil, saksama dan timbang rasa pada semua rakyat.

MENTERI Besar Johor, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman mengetuai laungan �Daulat Tuanku� di hadapan Sultan Ibrahim Ismail selepas membacakan watikah pemasyhuran Sultan Johor kelima di Istana Besar, Johor Bahru, semalam.

"Saya akan memelihara dan menghormati agama Islam, adat istiadat Melayu dan memegang teguh pada undang-undang tubuh kerajaan negeri Johor dan Undang-Undang negeri," katanya.

Sementara itu, sebelum jenazah Almarhum Sultan Iskandar dibawa turun dari Balai Singgahsana, seluruh rakyat negeri yang berhimpun di hadapan Istana Besar, melaungkan 'Daulat Tuanku' sebanyak tiga kali kepada Sultan Ibrahim Ismail sebaik Abdul Ghani selesai mengumumkan pelantikan baginda sebagai Sultan Johor kelima.

Penasihat Majlis Agama Islam Johor (MAIJ), Datuk Nooh Gadot kemudian membaca doa selamat atas pelantikan Sultan Ibrahim Ismail sebelum pancaragam Askar Timbalan Setia Negeri (TSN) Johor memainkan lagu negeri, 'Bangsa Johor'.

Jenazah Almarhum Sultan Iskandar yang diletakkan di dalam pedati berkenaan ditarik lebih 30 askar TSN dengan diiringi 78 das tembakan menuju makam diraja yang terletak kira-kira tiga kilometer dari Istana Besar.

Turut mengiringi pedati berkenaan, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail; Sultan Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah; Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah; Raja Muda Johor, Tunku Ismail Ibrahim dan Tunku Bendahara Johor; Tunku Abdul Majid Idris.

Twitter launched a new mobile site mobile.twitter.com, highly optimized for people who use twitter on their mobile devices. But according to twitter its only the Preview about what twitter is working for mobile device and it will fully available after optimization is completed.

The old Url m.twitter.com is still available and twitter will start switching everyone who uses ‘m’ in phases to automatically receive the new mobile web client after new version is ready .

How To Install Garmin XT on Nokia 5800 (Symbian S60 v3)

I ~~recently~~ bought a Nokia 5800 and asked if the shop keeper could install Garmin XT for me. Guess what? He wants to charge RM 80 (USD 20) for that!

It turns out, it is pretty tough considering my lack of expertise when it comes to Symbian OS phones. I spent 3 days experimenting all possibilities to make it work on my phone. Since it took a lot of my time, I’m going to save yours by teaching you.

Before you do anything, Download the file (80 mb ++) and read all the instructions before hand. It’ll help you to visualize the process.

1. Setting up Apparatus, The Nokia 5800

On your Nokia 5800, go to Application > Location > Positioning > Positioning Methods. Enable “Assisted GPS” and “Integrated GPS” ONLY. This will ensure you don’t get charge using WAP or 3G network for Internet.
Go to Application > Location > GPS Data > Position > Options > Satellite status. This will show the satellite signals you’re receiving. Be sure you are outdoor in an open area. Balcony doesn’t work well, believe me I’ve tried. Once you’ve got AT LEAST 4 satellite signal, go back indoor, you don’t want people to think you’re crazy, waving your phone around.
Now you’re ready for GarminXT.

2. Installing GarminXT on Nokia 5800.

Once you’ve downloaded, unzip the files to someplace accessible preferably on your desktop. If you haven’t, please download it.
Connect your phone via USB and select ‘Mass storage mode’.
From you PC, double click “GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50040.exe” to install and wait.
Double click “GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe” to install. Wait..
Double click “GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe” to install.
Remove USB connection between PC and phone. When prompted ‘Launch GarminXT’ do not click Yes, just Cancel.
From your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Application Manager > Installation files. There should be GarminXT.sis file. Install it.

3. Cracking GarminXT on Nokia 5800.

Tell yourself and say “Yes, I’m a cheapskate”.
Run GarminXT from your phone at Menu > Application > Garmin. It will prompt you with some settings. Choose your preferable.
Select “Use other device” when it prompts you to buy or trial. You will get a screen, “Where To?” and “View map”
In GarminXT, go to Tools > Settings > About. Jot down “Card ID”, you will need it. Exit GarminXT
On your PC, run “garmin_kgen.exe” and enter the “Card ID” from previous steps.
Generate it and you will get a string of codes. Copy the codes to Notepad and save it as “sw.unl”. *Be sure you don’t save it as sw.unl.txt”*
Connect your phone to PC and select “Mass storage mode”.
Copy “sw.unl” to Garmin folder. Usually located at E:/Garmin.
Copy “gmapsupp.img” from downloaded file to Garmin folder. “gmapsupp.img” is the Malaysian map.
Disconnect your phone from PC.

5. Setting up GarminXT on Nokia 5800

You don’t need your PC anymore. Shut down and conserve energy.
Run GarminXT on your phone.
Go to Tools > Settings > System > Remote GPS. Change to “Use Attached GPS” by disabling the “Bluetooth GPS”.
Go to Tools > Manage My Data > Map Sets > MapSource. Make sure all maps are enabled.

Kanye West Has Truly Lost It This Time

You know that saying, it takes a village to raise a child?

Apparently, Kanye's village has failed him. He obviously doesn't have a real friend in the world. There does not appear to be anyone who can get through to him, to make him understand that he needs to curb his obnoxious behavior.

I thought it was a joke when Kanye showed up on the MTV Video Music Awards stage next to Taylor Swift, right in the middle of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me." It was the first Moon Man for the 19-year-old country starlet, who has become an equally huge star in the pop world.

"I always dreamed about what it would be like to win one of these one day," Taylor said with surprise. "I never thought it would happen."

As Taylor continued, Kanye interrupted, saying he thought Beyonce's "Single Ladies" video was wrongly overlooked. "Hey Taylor, I'm really happy for you, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."

Taylor looked humiliated. I felt humiliated for her. The audience booed him, and gave her a standing ovation.

I didn't expect Taylor to win that award, and I'm not upset about Kanye's opinion. However, bum-rushing the stage wasn't the appropriate time and place to express his disagreement.

Not only was Kanye's approach disrespectful, it was especially disrespectful because it was directed towards a woman--a teenage girl, actually. Taylor won't turn 20 until December. I can only imagine how her father feels. I'm sure he would like to have a talk to Kanye. I'm not related to her, and I'd like to have a talk with him.

If Kanye wants people to win the awards he thinks they deserve, he should create his own event. He should name it after his website, KanyeUniversecity.com, and webcast it.

Kanye is a guest at the MTV Video Music Awards. He does not determine the winners. The winners are determined by popular vote. Furthermore, aside from the fact that Taylor Swift is a top-selling artist, who has revolutionized teen country pop, she did not have any competition in this category as her competitors Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Pink, and Kelly Clarkson split the pop vote. Taylor had to get 100 percent of the country vote, plus some of the pop vote as well.

It's simple math that even a "College Dropout" should be able to figure out.

Ironically, a MTV writer joked that Kanye's rant was an indication that he might be inebriated. "Kanye West ruins Taylor Swift's big moment," the MTV.com editor wrote. "Further proof that he's on the Hennessy. In my humble opinion, that is."

MTV also reported that Perez Hilton and Hayley Williams started a #TeamTaylor trend on Twitter.

Pink tweeted about her annoyance with Kanye. "Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh-t on earth. Quote me," she wrote. "My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl, and deserved her moment. She should know we all love her."

Kanye has previously made award show rants about Gretchen Wilson, Justice and Simian, as well as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, but this was the worst.

I give credit to Taylor. She handled it gracefully. The audience countered him by giving her a standing ovation, and booed Kanye throughout the night whenever his name was mentioned.

Taylor performed "You Belong With Me" live just minutes later. I watched, wondering if she would feel flustered, and if it would show in her performance. But it didn't.

I think she channeled that negative energy into a positive. Good for her.

Fortunately, Taylor got another chance to complete her acceptance speech. When Beyonce accepted the Best Video Award for "Single Ladies," she invited Taylor back on stage.

"Wow, this is amazing," Beyonce said when receiving her award. "I remember being 17-years-old and up for my first MTV award with Destiny's Child. It was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I'd like for Taylor to come out and have her moment."

Taylor then joined Beyonce on stage and recited her acceptance speech, only making a subtle reference to the incident. Before rattling off her special thanks, she said, "Maybe we can try this again."

After the awards, Kanye posted an apology to Taylor on his website, KanyeUniversecity.com. "I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM," Kanye wrote on his site, AP reported. "I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

Still, MTV should have thrown Kanye out of the event. Had any other heckler had the audacity to interrupt the broadcast, they would have been thrown out and probably charged. He should not be treated any differently.

Peristiwa Nuzul Al-Quran berlaku pada malam Jumaat, 17 Ramadan, tahun ke-41 daripada keputeraan Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. etika baginda sedang beribadat di Gua Hira, bersamaan dengan tanggal 6 Ogos 610M. Perkataan "Nuzul" bererti turun atau berpindah dari atas ke bawah. Bila disebut bahawa Al-Quran adalah mukjizat terbesar Nabi SAW maka ianya memberi makna terlalu besar kepada umat Islam terutamanya yang serius memikirkan rahsia al-Quran. Ayat al-Quran yang mula-mula diturunkan Allah kepada Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. melalui perantaraan Malaikat Jibril ialah lima ayat pertama daripada Surah Al-Alaq.

Bahasa Melayu Malaysia Kian Hilang Bukan Kerana Bahasa Inggeris

Punca Bahasa Melayu Malaysia kian hilang ialah sistem pengajaran Bahasa Melayu Malaysia di sekolah dan maktab yang tidak menarik dan tidak kreatif.

Murid dan pelajar dipaksa belajar Bahasa Melayu Malaysia semata-mata untuk lulus peperiksaan dengan cemerlang dan maju setapak ke peringkat pembelajaran yang seterusnya.

Mereka kurang didedahkan kepada sastera Bahasa Melayu lama dan moden. Sistem pengajaran Bahasa Melayu Malaysia amat mekanikal dan ‘membosankan’.

Jikalau Bahasa Melayu Malaysia terus merosot dan tidak popular di kalangan rakyat Malaysia seperti hari ini, kemungkinan besar Malaysia terpaksa meminjam Bahasa Melayu Indonesia sebagai bahasa rasmi dan bahasa kebangsaan Malaysia.

Budaya Melayu Malaysia juga kini di ambang kegelapan. Masyarakat Malaysia tidak hormat kepada budaya Melayu Malaysia sebab mereka sudah menjadi materialistik dan memuja-muja wang dolar Amerika.

Indonesia berjaya memperkukuhkan dan memartabatkan budaya Melayunya sepertimana negara republik gergasi itu berjaya memperkukuhkan dan memartabatkan Bahasa Melayunya.

Bahasa Melayu Indonesia kini layak digelar bahasa ilmu dan budaya Melayu Indonesia kini layak digelar budaya bertaraf dunia.

Di Malaysia, Bahasa Melayu kerap dikatakan “tidak mempunyai kekuatan sejarah dan falsafah bagi dibangunkan sebagai bahasa moden ataupun bahasa dunia”.

Ramai orang yang buta sejarah dan mengatakan secara sinis bahawa “ketika sarjana Perancis membincangkan atom dan molekul di zaman Renaissance Eropah, orang Melayu Malaysia masih lagi bercucuk tanam dan menangkap ikan seperti Orang Asli pedalaman.”

Sebenarnya Bahasa Melayu telahpun menjadi bahasa ilmu sekian lama. Bahasa Melayu telah menjadi antara bahasa utama dalam pengajaran dan perkembangan agama Islam selain Bahasa Arab, Hindi dan Parsi.

Tetapi Bahasa Melayu yang digunakan itu ialah Bahasa Melayu Indonesia yang kita kenal sekarang.

Bahasa Melayu Indonesia ialah Bahasa Melayu Rakyat (atau Bahasa Melayu Rendah). Bahasa Melayu Malaysia ialah Bahasa Melayu Pembesar (atau Bahasa Melayu Tinggi).

Bahasa Melayu Rakyat adalah Bahasa Melayu perdagangan. Bahasa Melayu Pembesar ialah Bahasa Melayu pembesar dan pemerintah.

Bahasa Melayu Rakyat, dan juga dialek Bahasa Melayu Kelantan (atau Bahasa Melayu Champa) telah digunakan sebagai lingua franca di Indochina semasa zaman Hindu-Buddha kesultanan Kelantan.

Bahasa yang diguna pakai di Indochina itu dipanggil Bahasa Kolan (Bahasa Kelantan, walaupun sebenarnya bahasa itu adalah Bahasa Johor atau Bahasa Johor-Riau).

Orang Melayu Kelantan amat mahir dalam ilmu hisab di zaman itu, dan ada sarjana India yang berpendapat bahawa angka sifar dicipta oleh orang Melayu Kelantan.

Kesultanan Funan yang pendirinya merupakan orang Melayu Kelantan (atau orang Mon atau orang Bulang) aktif berdagang dan berkongsi ilmu dengan negara China.

Raja Funan telah menghantar buku-buku sarjananya ke China untuk diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Cina di abad keenam Masihi.

Raja Funan dan sarjananya juga banyak belajar bahasa Cina dan Sanskrit (Hindi lama) bagi tujuan menimba ilmu.

Bahasa Melayu Rakyat dan Pembesar adalah Bahasa Melayu Johor (atau Johor-Riau). Ia digunakan oleh Empayar Melayu Johor-Riau (atau Srivijaya) dan kemudiannya Empayar Melaka.

Empayar Melayu Johor-Riau menguasai seluruh Malaysia, Singapura, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Berunai, Filipina, Taiwan dan Madagascar moden.

Bahasa Melayu Rakyat bukan sahaja digunakan untuk mengembangkan agama Islam tetapi juga agama Hindu dan Buddha.

Sarjana Tibet Atisa telah mempelajari Bahasa Melayu Rakyat di Johor-Riau pada abad ke-11 Masihi dan kemudian membawa ilmu dari Johor-Riau ke Tibet untuk mereformasi pengajaran agama Buddha di sana.

Beliau juga telah menterjemahkan buku-buku agama Buddha dalam Bahasa Melayu Rakyat kepada Bahasa Tibet dan Bahasa Cina.

Untuk menjadikan Bahasa Melayu kuat di dunia, seperti Bahasa Inggeris, Mandarin (China) dan Sepanyol, orang Malaysia harus mempelajari Bahasa Melayu Indonesia iaitu Bahasa Melayu Rakyat.

Untuk menjadikan budaya Melayu kuat di dunia, seperti budaya Inggeris, China dan Sepanyol, orang Malaysia harus mempelajari budaya Melayu Indonesia kerana Indonesia adalah raja budaya Melayu sedunia, bukan Malaysia.

Ini tidak bermaksud Malaysia adalah anak dan Indonesia ialah bapa.

Indonesia adalah bahagian negeri Johor yang ditakluk dan dipisahkan dari Johor oleh Raja Belanda di zaman penjajahan di abad ke-19.

Indonesia adalah 'badan' negeri Johor lama dan menyimpan 98 peratus daripada khazanah negeri Johor lama iaitu negeri Melayu teragung di dunia.

Sejarah Jalur Gemilang

Permulaan asal Jalur Gemilang bermula apabila pada tahun 1949, dengan persetujuan Majlis Raja-Raja sebuah jawatankuasa telah ditubuhkan untuk menimbang dan membuat perakuan berhubung dengan rekabentuk bendera bagi Persekutuan Tanah Melayu yang baru.

Untuk tujuan itu satu pertandingan bagi mereka bentuk bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu yang baru pada tahun 1949.

Pertandingan peringkat kebangsaan ini dianjurkan oleh Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan dan disertai oleh 373 karyawan.

Daripada sejumlah itu, tiga rekabentuk bendera baru bagi Persekutuan Tanah Melayu telah dipilih untuk ke peringkat akhir.

Rekabentuk pertama ialah lambang keris bersilang di tengah-tengah dengan dikelilingi oleh 11 bintang pecah lima.

Rekabentuk kedua hampir serupa dengan rekabentuk pertama tetapi 11 bintang pecah lima itu disusun dalam dua bulatan mengelilingi keris bersilang itu.

Rekabentuk ketiga ialah 11 jalur biru dan putih dengan bulan dan bintang berwarna kuning di bahagian tepi kiri.

Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan telah memberi peluang kepada orang ramai untuk memberikan pendapat kepada ketiga-tiga rekabentuk tersebut.

Keputusan pendapat umum yang dikelolakan oleh akhbar The Malay Mail itu telah disiarkan pada 29 November 1949. Keputusan akhir menunjukkan majoriti telah memilih rekabentuk ciptaan seorang arkitek kerajaan di Johor iaitu En. Mohamad bin Hamzah.

Setelah diubahsuai beberapa kali, rekabentuk tersebut telah teliti pada Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja pada 22 dan 23 Februari 1950.

Pada 19 April 1950, Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan telah meluluskan usul yang dibentangkan oleh Pemangku Ketua Setiausaha Negara seperti berikut:

"That in the opinion of this Council the Flag of the Federation of Malaya should be as follows:- Eleven horizontal stripes alternately red and white in colour, the uppermost stripe being red, having a blue quarter with a cresent and eleven pointed star in yellow superimposed, the standard size of the flag to be six feet by three feet."

Reka bentuk bendera tersebut telah mendapat kelulusan Raja George VI pada 19 Mei 1950

Dengan itu, buat pertama kalinya bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu telah dikibarkan dalam satu majlis menaikkan bendera tersebut yang dianjurkan oleh Pesuruhjaya Tinggi British pada 26 Mei 1950 di perkarangan Istana Sultan Selangor dengan dihadiri oleh DYMM Raja-Raja Melayu dan Pegawai-pegawai Raja George VI

Sebelum kekal dengan rekaan sekarang, beberapa pindaan dibuat termasuk mengikut cadangan Sultan Kedah yang meminta warna putih bulan sabit ditukar kuning bagi mewakili warna Diraja.

Pada 19 April 1950, Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan menerusi perkenan Majlis Raja-raja Melayu meluluskan usul yang dibentangkan Pemangku Ketua Setiausaha Negara mengenai Bendera Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.

Pada 26 Mei tahun yang sama, bendera itu dikibarkan buat pertama kalinya di Istana Sultan Selangor, Kuala Lumpur. Majlis pengibaran yang berlangsung pada 9.30 pagi itu dihadiri wakil Sultan seluruh tanah Melayu.

CHINA proved to be head and shoulders above Malaysia when they beat the hosts 5-1 in an Asian Cup Group C match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last night.

The Chinese, fielding a formidable line-up, were always in control and although Malaysia did manage the occasional counter-attack, never looked like matching their opponents in any department.It was China who, as expected, threatened early and missed taking the lead in the ninth minute when Sun Jihai’s cross found an unmarked Han Peng whose header failed to find the mark. Malaysia were awarded a free kick a minute later but Hardi Jaafar’s shot hit the wall and Shahrulnizam Mustafa failed to connect the rebound. China took the lead in the 15th minute when a Shao Jiayi pass caught the Malaysian defence napping and this time Han Peng did not make a mistake rising majestically to find the target with a header.
"I am not happy with the way the players played. The game plan was to cut off their passes but we failed to do so," said Malaysia coach Norizan Bakar. "In the second half the players lacked urgency. I don’t want to single out any player but the entire team needs to take the responsibility for the defeat. Out next step is to build the team’s confidence."Malaysia did not lose hope and continued to apply the pressure but found opposing midfielders Shao Jihai and Shao Jiayi cutting off the crosses from Hardi Jaafar and Shukor Adan.China came close to making it 2-0 in the 30th minute when an unmarked Han Peng ballooned a perfect Mao Jianqing cross. "But I am not happy with the goal that Malaysia scored, we can’t afford to let in this kind of goals."Malaysia’s best chance came in the 41st minute but Hairuddin Omar failed to connect a Akmal Rizal cross with only the goalkeeper to beat.The hosts tried to get back into the match after the break when Akmal Rizal played a one-two with Sukor Adan before laying it on for Hairuddin who missed yet again.The Malaysian players were looking ragged and in the 51st minute Rosdi Talib, who was under no pressure, sent a clearance straight to Wang Dong who scored China’s third.Just three minutes later it was Han Peng again who punished the hosts with a fourth.Malaysia’s coach Norizan Bakar brought in K. Nanthakumar for Fadzli Shaari in the 57th minute but it was too little too late. Norizan made another substitution in the 61st minute replacing Akmal Rizal with Indra Putra Mahayuddin, and it paid off in the 73rd minute when the Pahang striker blasted Malaysia’s only goal following a pass from Hairuddin.

LUPE FIASCO

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (born February 16, 1982), better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper. He came to fame in 2006 following the success of his debut album, Food & Liquor, which received three Grammy nominations.

Early life

Raised on the west side of Chicago, Wasalu is the youngest of nine brothers. His father (died: February 27, 2007) was a prolific African drummer and karate teacher. His mother was a gourmet chef. Lupe began to rap when he was in the eighth grade, and began to pursue it at the age of seventeen.

Growing up, Wasalu had the nickname "Lu", the last part of his first name. "Lupe" is an extension of this nickname, which he borrowed from a friend named Lupe from high school. "Fiasco", he says, "came from the Firm album. They had the song, "Firm Fiasco." I just liked the way it looked on paper".

Early career

Lupe was signed to Epic Records with his group, "Da Pak", and later signed a solo deal with Arista Records. During this time, he had guest appearances on singles on Tha' Rayne's "Kiss Me" and "Didn't You Know" and also K Fox's 2004 "This Life". He also released the song "Coulda Been" on a 10/03 compilation of MTV's Advance Warning.[3] He began releasing many mixtapes, glorifying himself as a hero of the nerd and middle class. Over time he began getting a huge fan base via the internet.

In 2004, Arista went out of business and Lupe was signed with Atlantic Records. In early 2006, Brian 'Busy' Dackowski of Atlantic Records approached Lupe and his friend/hypeman Dusean Bishop G Dunbar to start FNF Radio, a college radio station located at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The show is reported to have, on average, close to 6,000 listeners a night. The music featured on the show is mostly hip-hop and many of the songs played are either his own, or the artists on his label, 1st and 15th, as well as personal favorites or gag records. In between playing music, discussions are held on issues ranging from politics, music, sports, and entertainment. Also, 45 minutes into the show, a contest called the "freshen up package" is held where three questions are made up and the first person to call in with the correct answers, wins a prize.

Religion

Lupe has been open about his Islamic faith. He showcased it in his underground remix of friend and collaborator Kanye West's "Jesus Walks", entitled "Muhammad Walks". He has noted the importance of religion in his life, stating:

Well, I was born Muslim, so Islam plays a part in my life and everything I do, to a certain extent. I'm not like the poster boy for Islam... I still got my flaws and stuff like that, so I don't really wear that on my sleeve... I don't go to clubs, I don't drink, I don't smoke, you know like my whole - the whole groupie situation is shut down.

The font of "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor" on the cover art of Food & Liquor is stylized to look like that of Persian calligraphy, designed by New York artist Rostarr.

Influences

Lupe is highly influenced by Crucial Conflict and Nas among others. Lupe regards It Was Written as one of his favorite albums and cites it as his primary source of inspiration. For instance, when asked of his influences in an interview with AllHipHop.com, Lupe stated the following: "You know I really tried to go back and recreate [Nas'] It Was Written, you know what I'm saying like that? [I would play] It Was Written and then I would play my album, and it was like, `Do we got [this] record, do we got that record?'"

NobodySmiling.com : Now you've said many times that your album is modeled after `It Was Written,' and a lot of people wouldn't admit that because a lot people would be like He's biting or whatever. So why do you feel so comfortable admitting that?

Lupe Fiasco : Cause it's a classic. Like, people study-you study the masters, you know what I'm saying? Everybody that's rapping studied someone to learn how to rap. They had a rapper who was they favorite rapper that they wanted to be like and wanted to rap like, know what I'm saying? For me, I just look at it like I studied a masterpiece. I modeled my album after a masterpiece; and not song for song; not line for line; not beat for beat. It was more-for me it was like mood for mood. The way he set the mood on that album to me was just like incredible. And at the time in my life-like, I fell in love with 'It Was Written' when I was seventeen/eighteen—a very impressionable time—so I was like I love that album. That's my favorite Hip Hop album, so it's like why not base your album on 'It Was Written?'

Along with It Was Written, Lupe claims to have enjoyed music by 2Pac, Too $hort and Jay-Z in "Hurt Me Soul."

Carmelo Anthony VS Lebron James

For months it was known who would go #1 to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but just because your taken #1 doesn’t mean your the best player in the draft. The Cavs obviously not only took James thinking he was the best player, but he’s a local boy from Akron, which means greater interest in him and an already developed fan base. All that turns into a lot more cash in the form of merchandise sales, media exposure, and ticket sales. As for improving the Cavaliers as a team, well that might not be so clear cut. With a roster already loaded with guys who go by the shoot first mentality (Ricky Davis, Dajuan Wagner, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Darius Miles) will the flashy James be able to get enough shots to please himself and all the fans, which until he was drafted were no where to be found at a Cavaliers game. James has said all the right things in his interviews how he’s a team player, just wants to improve the team anyway he can, which is all probably true, but it also helps to have those feelings when you’ve already got $90 million coming your way without having done any of those things. Barring a trade of one of the aforementioned Cavs shooters, James in my opinion will have a very Ricky Davis type rookie season, 12-20 PPG a few rebounds, assists with the occasional spectacular dunk, now obviously James has a much better future then does Davis but until the Cavaliers start building around James and not just sticking him in an already crowded line-up, James will just be a very productive ticketmaster. At only 19 years old Carmelo Anthony led the Syracuse Orangemen to the NCAA Title in his freshman year, leading not only in his play but by his example. Many people have made the argument that if Anthony was the best player he would have been the #1 selection in the draft, but it was James who went first, with all the ESPN coverage and media hype. Just take a look at the level of competition these two were facing, where James was playing against 15-17 year old high school players who clearly were not any match for a more physically mature James, Carmelo was going up against some of the best college players in the game, who in their own right will be in the NBA someday. Not only that Anthony carried his team through the grueling NCAA tournament and defeated two #1 seeds in doing so. With all the defensive attention on him and how to stop him he raised his level of play to not only get himself going but to help his teammates as well. Now a member of the Denver Nuggets, Anthony will immediately be one of their (if not their best) top players. Where unlike the Cavs have James surrounded with players that have skills similar to his, the Nuggets really have no set roster and they have quite a bit of money to spend on free agents. While drafting a future superstar to build your team around, and having the ability to be a major player in free agency doesn’t guarantee success, I believe you’ll be seeing the Denver Nuggets playoff drought ending well before that of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Carmelo Kiyan Anthony (born May 29, 1984, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American professional basketball player at the small forward position for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA and the USA National Team.

His father, after whom Anthony is named, died of cancer when Anthony was 10 years old. He lived in the Redhook Projects in Brooklyn, New York, for two more years. When Anthony was in third grade his family moved to Baltimore in 1992 where he began winning local basketball awards. He has two brothers, Robert and Wilford, a sister, Michelle, and half-sister, Daphne. His mother is African-American, and his father was Puerto Rican.

Carmelo grew up in the Druid Hill section of West Baltimore, where he commuted to Towson Catholic High School for his first three years of high-school. During the summer of 2000, when he grew five inches, he made a name for himself in the area, being named the 2001 Baltimore Sun's metro player of the year, as well as Baltimore Catholic League player of the year. Anthony transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia for his senior campaign and became a high school All-American.

Anthony played one season at Syracuse University. He averaged 22.1 points (16th in the nation, 4th in the Big East) and 10.0 rebounds (19th in the NCAA, 3rd in Big East), in leading the Orangemen to their first ever NCAA tournament title in 2003. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, minutes played (36.4 minutes per game), field goals made and attempted and free throws made and attempted. In the finals game against University of Kansas Anthony had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Carmelo also earned the tournament's Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors; his efforts included a 33 point game against Texas in the semi-final. Afterward, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim described Anthony as, "...by far, the best player in college basketball. It wasn't even close. Nobody was even close to him last year in college basketball. That's the bottom line."^[1] Anthony says that he originally planned to stay at Syracuse for at least two seasons, but having already accomplished everything he set out to, he chose to abandon his collegiate career with Boeheim's blessing, and declared himself eligible for the 2003 NBA Draft.

Some of Anthony's highlights in his time with Syracuse were being Named Second-Team All-America by AP as a freshman, leading his team to a 30-5 record, capturing the schools first ever NCAA title and being the consensus pick for national Freshman of the Year. He was named to the All-Big East First team and was also made the consensus selection for Big East Conference Freshman of the Year.

Carmelo's NBA career began on June 26, 2003, when he was chosen in the first round (3rd overall) in the annual draft by the Denver Nuggets behind LeBron James (1st overall, Cleveland Cavaliers) and Darko Milicic (2nd overall, Detroit Pistons). He made his NBA regular season debut on Wednesday October 29, 2003, versus the San Antonio Spurs. He finished the night scoring 12 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. In just his sixth career NBA game Anthony scored 30 points (November 7th versus LA Clippers) becoming just the second youngest player in NBA history to score 30 points or more (19 years, 151 days) (Kobe Bryant was the youngest). Anthony was 19 years old when he accomplished that goal. It was also the fewest amount of games a Denver Nuggets rookie took to score 30 points in 1 contest since the ABA/NBA merger. On February 9, 2004, against the Memphis Grizzlies, Anthony became the third youngest player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in NBA history with a 20 point effort in an 86-83 win.

On Friday, February 13, 2004, Anthony participated in the got milk? Rookie Challenge at All-Star Weekend. In 30 minutes of playing time Anthony scored 17 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out five assists in a losing effort (142-118). On March 30, 2004 he scored 41 points against the Seattle Supersonics to set a new Denver Nuggets franchise mark for most points in a game by a rookie. He also became the second-youngest player (19 years, 305 days) to score at least 40 points in a game in NBA history.

As the season concluded Anthony was a major part in the turnaround of the Nuggets from league laughingstock to playoff contender. In the season before Anthony was drafted by them, the Denver Nuggets finished with a 17-65 record, which tied them for worst in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers. They finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 43-39 overall record qualifying them for the post-season. He became the first NBA rookie to lead a playoff team in scoring since David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs did so in the 1989-90 season.

After winning the Rookie of the Month award for April, Anthony became just the fourth player in NBA history to capture all six of the Rookie of the Month awards in the season. Carmelo was also named NBA player of the week twice and was a unanimous NBA All-Rookie First Team selection. Anthony was first among NBA rookies with a 21.0 PPG mark which also placed him 12th is the association. Anthony finished second in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting. He was the runner up to the Cavaliers rookie standout LeBron James.

Denver's post-season berth would be short lived though as Anthony and the rest of his team were lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.

In Carmelo's second season in the NBA he played in 75 of the 82 games for the Denver Nuggets, starting every game. He averaged 20.8 PPG which ranked him 19th in the NBA and placed 16th in the NBA for points per 48 minutes. On December 4, 2004 versus the Miami Heat, Anthony became the third-youngest player in NBA history to reach 2,000 career points. Only LeBron James and Kobe Bryant were younger when they reached that plateau. Anthony played again in the got milk? Rookie Challenge, this time suiting up for the sophomore squad. In front of his home fans of Denver (who were hosting the 2005 All-Star Game), Anthony scored a game high 31 points to go along with 5 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals en route to becoming the MVP of the game.

With Anthony's help the Nuggets improved by six games and ended the season 49-33 which was good enough for seventh place in the Western Conference (one spot higher than they finished the previous season). The second seeded San Antonio Spurs eliminated the Nuggets in five games in the first round.

As he did in the 2004-05 season, Anthony played and started in 80 games during the 2005-06 NBA campaign, putting up career highs in multiple categories. He averaged 26.5 PPG (8th, NBA), 2.7 APG, 4.9 RPG, and 1.10 SPG. His eighth place finish in NBA scoring was the highest finish by a Denver player since 1990-91 when Nuggets G Michael Adams finished the season sixth in NBA scoring. On November 23, 2005 with the Nuggets facing the two time defending Eastern Conference Champions the Detroit Pistons, Anthony hauled down his 1,000th career rebound.

On March 17, 2006, versus the Memphis Grizzlies, Anthony scored 33 points to push his career points over the 5,000 mark and in doing so became the second youngest player to accomplish that feat (behind Lebron James). As the month of March came to a close the Nuggets finished 11-5 and Anthony was named as the NBA Player of the Month for March.

For the first time in Anthony's career with the franchise, Denver held home court advantage in the opening round versus the LA Clippers. The Nuggets finished the season in third place with the Clippers ending the year in sixth. Los Angeles won the first two games of the series on the Nuggets home floor and again the Nuggets were eliminated in the first round.

Early in the 2006-07 season, in the eighth game of the season, Anthony tied the franchise record of six-straight 30-point games recorded by Alex English in the 1982-83 season, falling short of establishing a new record as he finished with 29 points in his ninth game, a 113-109 victory over the Chicago Bulls on November 21, 2006. After the Chicago victory, Anthony again tied the club record of six-straight 30 point games failing to break it the second time around as he scored 24 points in only his 16th game last December 6, 2006 in a 98-96 home loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

On December 16, 2006, Anthony was one of many players involved in the Knicks-Nuggets brawl during a game at Madison Square Garden. Footage shows Anthony punched New York's Mardy Collins in the face and then backed up to mid-court. As a result of his actions, Anthony was suspended for 15 games by NBA commissioner David Stern.^[2]

On January 22, 2007, Anthony returned to the court after his 15-game suspension to play against the Memphis Grizzlies, finishing the game with 28 points.

On February 1, 2007, the reserves for the Western Conference All-Star team were announced, and Anthony was left off of it. However, with Yao Ming and Carlos Boozer out with injury, commissioner David Stern chose Anthony as a replacement (along with Josh Howard).

On February 2, 2007, Anthony and fellow teammate J.R. Smith were involved in a car accident. Neither player was injured in the collision and the only details released by the team at this point was that the car Smith was driving belonged to Anthony.

On February 5, 2007, Anthony recorded his first ever NBA triple-double with 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 113-108 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Anthony was chosen as a member of the 2004 USA Olympic basketball team. On August 23, 2006, Anthony set the US scoring record in a game with 35 points against Italy in the FIBA tournament. This record was previously held by Kenny Anderson with 34 points in 1990.

On January 16, 2007, Anthony was chosen as USA Basketball's male athlete of the year. Anthony averaged 19.9 points on a team that won a bronze medal in Japan.

Off the court, Anthony donates time and money to causes in Denver and Baltimore. In Denver, Anthony is a spokesman for Family Resource Centers and hosts an annual Christmas party for underprivileged children, "A Very Melo Christmas." In Baltimore, Anthony hosts an annual 3-on-3 tournament, oversees "HOOD Movement" and is helping fund the revitalization of a local community center for local youth.^[3]

Anthony opened a youth development center that carries his name in Baltimore on December 14, 2006. "His $1.5 million contribution over the next five years to Living Classroom Foundation, a nonprofit organization that serves 40,000 students with 35 education and workforce development programs, revitalized a youth center after being closed for almost one year,"^[4] according to a Baltimore Times report.

Anthony has committed $3 million toward the construction of a newly planned basketball practice facility at his alma mater, Syracuse University. According to www.NBA.com, "Anthony’s gift represents one of the largest individual donations to Syracuse University Athletics and is also believed to be one of largest by a current professional athlete to the school they attended."^[5] The facility will be located on the Syracuse University campus.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player. Widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, he became the most effectively marketed athlete of his generation and was instrumental in spreading the appeal of the NBA (National Basketball Association) around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.

After a standout career at the University of North Carolina, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as one of the stars of the league, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, vividly illustrated by his ability to perform slam dunks from the foul line at Slam Dunk Contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness." He also gained a reputation as one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". Though Jordan abruptly left the NBA in October 1993 to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998). Michael Jordan was born to James R. Jordan, Sr. and Deloris Jordan in Brooklyn, New York. His family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, when he was seven years old.^[1] Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, where he anchored his athletic career by playing baseball, football, and basketball. He tried out for the varsity basketball team during his sophomore year, but at 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m), he was deemed too short to play at that level. The following summer, however, he grew four inches (10 cm)^[2] and trained rigorously. Upon earning a spot on the varsity roster, Jordan averaged 25 points per game over the next two seasons. As a senior, he was selected to the McDonald's All-American Team^[3] after averaging a triple-double: 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 10.1 assists.^[4]

In 1981, Jordan earned a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where he majored in cultural geography. As a freshman in coach Dean Smith's team-oriented system, he was named ACC Freshman of the Year as he averaged 13.4 points per game on 53.4% shooting.^[5] He was an exciting if not dominant player, but the Tar Heels were led by All-American and future Hall of Famer James Worthy. Jordan made the game-winning jump shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game against Georgetown, which was led by future NBA rival Patrick Ewing.^[2] After winning the Naismith and Wooden College Player of the Year Awards in 1984, Jordan left North Carolina one year early to enter the 1984 NBA Draft. The Chicago Bulls selected Jordan with the third overall pick, after Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets) and Sam Bowie (Portland Trail Blazers). Jordan returned to North Carolina to complete his degree in 1986.^[6]

Professional sports career

Early career

Jordan was an immediate success and a media sensation as a rookie^[2]^[7]^[8] as he averaged 28.2 points per game (ppg.) on 51.5% shooting (field goal percentage) in his first season.^[5] He quickly became a fan favorite for his athletic leaping ability and bold drives to the basket.^[8]^[9] Jordan was voted in as an All-Star starter by the fans in his rookie season.^[2] Controversy arose during the All-Star game when word surfaced that several veteran players led by Isiah Thomas were upset with the amount of attention Jordan was getting and led a so called "freeze-out" of Jordan, refusing to pass him the ball throughout the game.^[2] The controversy left Jordan relatively unaffected when he returned to regular season play and he would go on to be voted Rookie of the Year.^[10] The Bulls would finish the season 38-44,^[11] and lose in the first round of the playoffs in four games to the Milwaukee Bucks.^[10]

Jordan's second season was cut short by a broken foot which caused him to miss 64 games. Despite Jordan's injury and a 30–52 record,^[11] the Bulls made the the playoffs. Jordan recovered in time to participate in the playoffs and performed exceptionally well. Against a 1985–86 Boston Celtics team that is often considered one of the greatest in NBA history,^[12] Jordan put on a performance for the ages scoring a playoff record 63 points in game 2.^[13] Despite his efforts the more talented, deeper Celtics would sweep the series.^[10]

Jordan would come back fully healthy and put up one of the statistically greatest seasons in NBA history in 1986–87. Jordan became the only player other than Wilt Chamberlain to score 3,000 points in a season as he averaged 37.1 points on 48.2% shooting.^[5] Despite his numbers, Jordan lost out on the league MVP award to Magic Johnson. The Bulls would reach 40 wins,^[11] and advance to the playoffs for the third consecutive year. However they were again swept by the Celtics.^[10]

Mid-career: Pistons roadblock

Jordan had another excellent season in 1987–88 averaging 35.0 ppg on 53.5% shooting.^[5] For his efforts Jordan won his first league MVP award. He combined the trophy with a defensive player of the year award, a rarity for a guard, as he averaged 1.6 blocks and a league leading 3.16 steals per game.^[14] The Bulls finished 50–32,^[11] and made it out of the first round of the playoffs for the first time in Jordan's career as they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games.^[15] However the Bulls then lost in five games to the more experienced Detroit Pistons,^[10] who were led by Isiah Thomas and a group of physical big men known as the "Bad Boys".

In 1988–89 Jordan averaged 32.5 ppg. on 53.8% shooting from the field,^[5] and the Bulls finished 47–35.^[11] They advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals defeating the Knicks and Cavaliers along the way. The Cavaliers series contained a career highlight for Jordan when he hit a series winning shot over Craig Ehlo in the closing moments of the fifth and deciding game of the series. However the Pistons would again defeat the Bulls, this time in six games,^[10] by utilizing their "Jordan Rules" method of guarding Jordan, which consisted of double and triple teaming him every time he touched the ball.^[2]

The Bulls entered the 1989-90 season as a team on the rise. With their core group of Jordan and young improving players like Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant, they were becoming a more dangerous and cohesive team under the guidance of coach Phil Jackson. Jordan averaged 33.6 ppg on 52.6% shooting,^[5] and lead the Bulls to a 55–27 record.^[11] They would again advance to the Eastern Conference Finals beating the Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers en route. However, despite pushing the series to seven games, the Bulls lost to the Pistons for the third consecutive season.^[10]

First three-peat

In the 1990–91 season, Jordan, motivated by the team's narrow defeat against the Pistons a year earlier, finally bought into Jackson and assistant coach Tex Winter's triangle offense after years of resistance.^[16] That year, he won his second MVP award after averaging 31.5 ppg, 6.0 rebounds per game (rpg), and 5.5 assists per game (apg) for the regular season.^[5] The Bulls finished in first place for the first time in 16 years and set a franchise record with 61 wins in the regular season.^[11] With Scottie Pippen developing into an All-Star, the Bulls elevated their play to another level. The Bulls defeated the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers in the opening two rounds of the playoffs. They advanced to Eastern Conference Finals where their rival, the Detroit Pistons, awaited them. However, this time when the Pistons employed their "Jordan Rules" defense of doubling and triple teaming him Jordan picked them apart with passing. Finally, the Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons in a surprising sweep.^[17]^[18] The ending of the fourth and final game of the series was unusual in that Isaiah Thomas led the Pistons off the court when there was still time remaining on the clock, choosing to forfeit the game instead of shaking hands with the Bulls.^[19]

The Bulls advanced to the NBA Finals where they then beat Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers four games to one. The Bulls compiled an outstanding 15–2 record during the playoffs.^[20] Perhaps the most well known moment of the series came in Game 2 when, attempting a dunk, Jordan avoided a potential Sam Perkins block by switching the ball from his right hand to his left in mid-air to lay the shot in.^[21] Jordan won his first NBA Finals MVP award unanimously,^[22] and cried while holding the NBA Finals trophy.

Jordan and the Bulls continued their dominance in the 1991–92 season, establishing a franchise record 67–15 record.^[11] Jordan won his second consecutive MVP award with a 30.1/6.4/6.1 season.^[14] After winning a physical 7-game series over the burgeoning New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs and finishing off the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Conference Finals in 6 games, the Bulls met Clyde Drexler and the Portland Trail Blazers in the Finals. The media, hoping to recreate a Magic-Bird rivalry, highlighted the similarities between "Air" Jordan vs. Clyde "The Glide" throughout the pre-Finals hype. In the first game of the Finals, Jordan scored a record 35 points in the first half and finished the game with 39.^[23] Jordan hit six three-point field goals during the first half,^[23] and in a memorable moment after the last three-pointer, he jogged down the court shrugging as he looked courtside. Marv Albert, who broadcast the game, later stated that it was as if Jordan was saying "I can't believe I'm doing this."^[24] The Bulls went on to win game one, and defeat the Blazers in six games. After the series Jordan was named Finals MVP for the second year in a row.^[22] Jordan would finish the series averaging 35.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 6.5 apg while shooting 53% from the floor.^[22] Drexler finished with averages of 24.8 ppg., 7.5 rpg., and 5.3 apg.,^[25] but only shot 41% from the floor.

In 1992-93, despite a 32.6/6.7/5.5 campaign,^[14] Jordan's streak of consecutive MVP seasons ended as he lost the award to his friend Charles Barkley. Fittingly, Jordan and the Bulls met Barkley and his Phoenix Suns in the 1993 NBA Finals, in a match-up dubbed by the media as "Altitude vs. Attitude".^[26] The Bulls captured their third consecutive NBA championship on a game-winning shot by John Paxson and a last-second block by Horace Grant, but Jordan was once again Chicago's catalyst. He averaged a Finals-record 41.0 PPG during the six-game series,^[27] and became the first player in NBA history to win three straight Finals MVP awards.^[22] With his third Finals triumph, Jordan capped off a spectacular seven-year run, but there were signs that Jordan was tiring of his massive celebrity and all of the non-basketball hassles in his life.

Gambling controversy

During the Bulls' playoff run in 1993 controversy arose when Jordan was seen gambling in Atlantic City the night before a game against the New York Knicks.^[28] In that same year he admitted to having to cover $57,000 in gambling losses,^[29] and author Richard Esquinas wrote a book claiming he had won $1.25 million in gambling money from Jordan on the golf course.^[29] In 2005 Jordan talked to Ed Bradley of the CBS evening show 60 Minutes about his gambling and admitted that he made some reckless decisions. Regarding his gambling Jordan stated, "Yeah, I’ve gotten myself into situations where I would not walk away and I’ve pushed the envelope. Is that compulsive? Yeah, it depends on how you look at it. If you’re willing to jeopardize your livelihood and your family, then yeah."^[30] When Bradley asked him if his gambling ever got to the level where it jeopardized his livelihood or family Jordan replied, "No."^[30]

First retirement

On October 6, 1993, Jordan announced his retirement, citing a loss in his desire to play the game. Jordan later stated that the murder of his father earlier in the year shaped his decision.^[31] James R. Jordan, Sr. was murdered on July 23, 1993, at a highway rest area in Lumberton, North Carolina, by Daniel Green and Larry Martin Demery, who were caught after being traced from calls the pair made on James Jordan's cellular phone.^[32] Both assailants were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Jordan was very close to his father; it was from him that he picked up his trademark habit of wagging his tongue out of his mouth as he drove to the basket, a habit Jordan developed after his watching his father do the same while working on mechanical devices.^[2] Jordan would later create and dedicate a Chicago area Boys & Girls Club to his father.^[33]^[34]

However, those close to Jordan claim that he was strongly considering retirement as early as the summer of 1992, and that the added exhaustion of the Dream Team run only solidified Jordan's burned-out feelings regarding the game and his ever-growing celebrity status. In any case, Jordan's announcement sent shock waves throughout the NBA and appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world.^[35]

Jordan then surprised the sports world by signing a minor league baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox. Jordan reported to spring training, and was assigned to the team's minor league system on March 31, 1994.^[36] Jordan has stated this decision was made to pursue the dream of his late father, who had always envisioned his son as a major league baseball player.^[37] The White Sox were another team owned by Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who continued to honor Jordan's basketball contract during the years he played baseball.^[38] He had an unspectacular professional baseball career for the Birmingham Barons, a Chicago White Sox farm team, batting .202 with 3 HR, 51 RBI, 30 SB (tied for fifth in Southern League), 11 errors and 6 assists.^[36] He led the club with 11 bases loaded RBI and 25 RBI with runners in scoring position and two outs.^[36] He also appeared for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the 1994 Arizona Fall League.

"I'm back": Return to the NBA

In the 1993–94 season, the Jordan-less Bulls notched a 55–27 record,^[11] and lost to the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs. But the 1994–95 version of the Bulls were a shell of the championship squad of just two years earlier. Struggling at mid-season to ensure a spot in the playoffs, Chicago needed a lift. In early 1995, the lift came when Michael Jordan called up Bulls guard B.J. Armstrong to go out for breakfast, a meal that led to an impromptu shoot-around, and eventually to Jordan's return to the NBA for the Bulls.

On March 18, 1995, Jordan announced his return to the NBA through a two-word press release: "I'm back."^[2] The next day, Jordan donned jersey number 45 (his number with the Barons), as his familiar 23 had been retired in his honor following his first retirement. He took the court with the Bulls to face the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, scoring 19 points in a Bulls loss.^[39]

Although Jordan had not played in an NBA game in a year and a half, he played well upon his return, which included another of his trademark game-winning jumpers (against Atlanta in his fourth game back), and a 55-point outburst against the Knicks on March 29, 1995.^[10] He led the Bulls to a 9–1 record in April of that year, propelling the team into the playoffs. The Bulls advanced to the Eastern Conference Semi-finals against the Orlando Magic that season, and Jordan averaged 31.5 points per game in the series, but Orlando prevailed in six games. After Orlando's Nick Anderson declared after the first game of the series that "He didn't look like the old Michael Jordan.",^[40] an extra-motivated Jordan began wearing his old number (23) again. This action succeeded in incurring fines from the NBA because the Bulls failed to notify the league in advance of the number change.^[41]

Second three-peat

Freshly motivated by the playoff defeat, Jordan trained aggressively for the 1995–96 season. Strengthened by the addition of rebounder specialist Dennis Rodman, the Bulls dominated the league, starting 41–3,^[42] and eventually finishing 72–10: the best regular season record in NBA history.^[43] Jordan led the league in scoring with 30.4 ppg,^[44] and won the league's regular season and All-Star Game MVP awards.^[2] In the playoffs, the Bulls lost only three games in four series, defeating the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA Finals to win the championship. Jordan was named Finals MVP for a record fourth time,^[22] surpassing Magic Johnson three Finals MVP awards.

In the 1996–97 season, the Bulls narrowly missed out on a second consecutive 70 win season after starting out 69–11 by losing their final two games to finish 69–13.^[45] However, this year Jordan was bested by Karl Malone for the NBA MVP Award. The team again advanced to the Finals, where they faced Malone and the Utah Jazz. The series against the Jazz featured two of the more memorable clutch moments of Jordan's career. He won Game 1 for the Bulls with a buzzer-beating jump shot. In Game 5, with the series tied 2–2, Jordan had a incredible peformance despite being feverish and dehydrated from a stomach virus. In whats known as the "flu game" Jordan scored 38 points (including the game-deciding three-pointer with less than a minute remaining) .^[46] The Bulls won 90-88 and went on to win the series in six games.^[45] For the fifth time in as many Finals appearances, Jordan received the Finals MVP award.^[22]

Jordan and the Bulls compiled a 62–20 record in the 1997–98 season.^[11] Jordan led the league with 28.7 points per game,^[14] securing his fifth regular-season MVP award, plus honors for All-NBA First Team, First Defensive Team and the All-Star Game MVP.^[2] The Bulls captured the Eastern Conference Championship for a third straight season and moved on to face the Jazz again in the Finals.

After going 3–2 in the first five games, the Bulls returned to Utah for game 6 on June 14, 1998. In Game 6, Jordan executed a series of plays that forms one of the greatest clutch performance in NBA Finals history.^[47] With the Bulls trailing 86-83 with 40 seconds remaining, Jackson called a timeout. Jordan received the inbounds pass, drove to the basket, and hit a layup over several Jazz defenders, which cut Utah's lead to 86–85.^[47] The Jazz brought the ball upcourt and passed the ball to forward Karl Malone, who was set up in the low post and was being guarded by Rodman. Malone jostled with Rodman and caught the pass, but Jordan cut behind him and swatted the ball out of his hands for a steal.^[47] Jordan then slowly dribbled upcourt and paused at the top of the key, eying his defender, Jazz guard Bryon Russell. With fewer than 10 seconds remaining, Jordan started to dribble right, crossed over to his left and as Russell slipped, he released a shot that would be rebroadcast countless times in years to come. As the shot found the net, announcer Bob Costas shouted "Chicago with the lead!"^[48] After a desperation three-point shot by John Stockton missed, Jordan and the Bulls had won their sixth NBA championship, and secured a second three-peat. Once again, Jordan was voted the Finals' MVP,^[22] having led all scorers by averaging more than 30 points per game, including 45 in the deciding Game 6.^[49] Jordan's six Finals MVPs is a record; Shaquille O'Neal, Magic Johnson, and Tim Duncan are tied for second place with three apiece.

Second retirement

Jordan's Game 6 heroics seemed to be a perfect ending to his career. With Phil Jackson's contract expiring, the pending departures of Scottie Pippen (who stated his desire to be traded during the season) and Dennis Rodman (who would sign with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent) looming, and being in the latter stages of an owner-induced lockout of NBA players, Jordan retired again on January 13, 1999. At his second retirement press conference, he paid tribute to a Chicago Police officer slain on duty just days before.^[33]

On January 19, 2000, Jordan returned to the NBA not as a player, but as part owner and President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards. His responsibilities with the club were to be comprehensive, as he was in charge of all aspects of the team, including personnel decisions. Less than a month later, Jordan won four ESPY Awards at the annual ceremony: Athlete of the Century; Male Athlete of the 1990s; Pro Basketball Player of the 1990s; and Play of the Decade, for the famous shot against the Lakers in the 1991 Finals in which he switched the ball from his right hand to his left in mid-air.^[50]

Opinions of Jordan as an executive were mixed.^[51]^[52] He managed to purge the team of several highly-paid, unpopular players (like forward Juwan Howard and point guard Rod Strickland),^[53]^[54] but many feel his lasting legacy as GM of the Wizards will be his selection of high school prospect Kwame Brown with the first pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, a player who has not lived up to expectations.^[51]^[55]

Despite his January 1999 claim that he was "99.9% certain" that he would never play another NBA game,^[56] Jordan began making noises in the summer of 2001 that he may be interested in another comeback, this time with his new team. Inspired by the comeback of NHL star (and Jordan's friend) Mario Lemieux the previous winter,^[57] Jordan spent much of the spring and summer of 2001 in training, holding several invitation-only camps for NBA players in Chicago. In addition, Jordan hired his old Chicago Bulls head coach, Doug Collins, as Washington's coach for the upcoming season, a decision that many saw as foreshadowing another Jordan return.

Washington Wizards comeback

In a September 10, 2001 press conference, Jordan strongly hinted at a comeback, but refused to confirm the rumors that had been swirling around him for the past month.^[58] On September 25, 2001 he announced his pending return to professional play with the Wizards, indicating his intention to donate his salary as a player to a relief effort for the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.^[59]^[60] In an injury-plagued 2001–02 season, he led the team in scoring (22.9 ppg), assists (5.2 apg), and steals (1.42 spg).^[2] Additionally, Jordan's presence resulted in all 41 arena sellouts at the Wizards' home court, the MCI Center, as well as sellouts of nearly every road arena that he would appear in over the two years of his second comeback (in his first year back, the Wizards sold out all but three of their road games). Jordan's best game with the Wizards came on December 29, against the Charlotte Hornets Jordan scored 51 points in a home game victory.^[61] However, injuries ended Jordan's season after only 60 games, the fewest he had played in a regular season since a broken foot cut short his season in 1985–86.^[5]

Playing in his 14th and final NBA All-Star Game in 2003, Jordan passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in All-Star game history. That year, Jordan was the only Washington player to play in all 82 games, starting in 67 of them. He averaged 20.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.^[2] He also shot 45% from the field, and 82% from the free throw line.^[2] Even though he turned 40 during the season, he scored 20 or more points 42 times, 30 or more points nine times, and 40 or more points three times.^[10]

On February 21, 2003, Jordan became the first 40-year-old to tally 40 points in an NBA game, scoring 43 to lead the Wizards to an 89-86 victory over the New Jersey Nets at the MCI Center.^[62] While the attendance numbers dipped off slightly in year two, the Wizards remained the most-watched team in the NBA with Jordan, averaging 20,173 fans a game at home and 19,311 on the road. In addition, the Wizards sold out all 82 home games of the Jordan era, breaking attendance records. However, neither of Jordan's final two seasons resulted in a playoff appearance for the Wizards.

Recognizing that this would be Jordan's final season, tributes were given to Jordan in almost every arena in the NBA. In his final game at his old home court the United Center in Chicago, Jordan received a prolonged standing ovation that Jordan himself had to interrupt, by giving an impromptu speech, because the crowd showed no signs of stopping. Out of respect for Jordan, the Miami Heat retired his #23 jersey on April 11, 2003, even though he never played for them.^[63] An additional honor was bestowed on Jordan in his final home game at Washington, where he was honored after the game by U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who presented him with the American flag that flew over the Pentagon on September 11, 2002, the one-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.^[64] At the 2003 All-Star Game, Vince Carter gave up his starting spot at shooting guard to Jordan, and the halftime ceremony was dedicated to Jordan's career, complete with a Mariah Carey musical tribute.

Jordan's final NBA game was on April 16, 2003 in Philadelphia. Against the 76ers Jordan played limited minutes due to the game's score, but still mustered 15 points,^[65] despite the eventual Wizards' loss. Having sat out for much of the fourth quarter, Jordan re-entered the game in the final minutes, after the Philadelphia crowd started chanting "We want Mike!" with 1:44 remaining. Jordan sank his last two free throws, and then exited to a standing ovation which lasted more than three minutes.^[65]

Jordan retired with 32,292 points,^[66] placing him third on the NBA's all-time scoring list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone.^[66]

After retiring as a player

After his third retirement, Jordan assumed that he would be able to return to his front office position of Director of Basketball Operations with the Wizards. However, his previous tenure in the Wizards' front office had produced the aforementioned mixed results and may have also influenced the trade of Richard "Rip" Hamilton for Jerry Stackhouse (although Jordan was not technically Director of Basketball Operations in 2002).^[51] On May 7, 2003, Wizards owner Abe Pollin fired Jordan as Washington's president of basketball operations.^[51] The firing came as a surprise to Jordan, who said at the time, "I am shocked by this decision and by the callous refusal to offer me any justification for it."^[51]

Jordan kept busy over the next few years by staying in shape, playing golf in celebrity charity tournaments, spending time with his family in Chicago, promoting his Jordan Brand clothing line, and riding motorcycles^[67] (a passion which he could not indulge in as a player, due to NBA contract restrictions). Since 2004, Jordan has owned a professional closed-course motorcycle roadracing team competing in the premier Superbike class sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA).^[68]

On June 15, 2006, Jordan became a part-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats and was named "Managing Member of Basketball Operations." He is the largest individual owner of the team after majority owner Robert L. Johnson.^[69] Despite Jordan's previous success as an endorser, he has made a conscious effort to not be included in the teams' marketing campaigns while with Charlotte.^[70]

In February of 2007 Jordan joined the likes of other all-time great dunkers such as Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, Julius Erving, and Dominique Wilkins as judges in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest during the 2007 NBA-All Star weekend.^[71]

Jordan played on two Olympic gold medal-winning American basketball teams: as a college player in the 1984 Summer Olympics, and in the 1992 Summer Olympics as a member of the original "Dream Team", with other legends such as Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and David Robinson among others. It is often rumored that Jordan influenced the U.S. Olympic Committee to keep guard Isiah Thomas off the roster due to personal differences such as the aforementioned "freeze-out" in the 1985 All-Star game or the bitter rivalry that developed between the Pistons and Bulls in the late 80's to early 90's.^[72] Although Thomas' exclusion may actually have been more a testament to the quality of the other guards on the team. In any case, it was a star-studded roster that cruised to the gold medal, restoring America to the top of the basketball world.

Jordan, Ewing and fellow Dream Team member Chris Mullin are the only American men's basketball players to win Olympic gold as amateurs (all in 1984) and professionals.

Player profile

Jordan was a shooting guard who was also capable of playing small forward. Jordan was known throughout his career for being a tremendous clutch performer. He decided countless games with last-second plays (e.g. The Shot) or sheer grit (e.g. Flu Game). His competitiveness was visible in his trademark trash talk,^[73]^[74] and his fanatical work ethic.^[75]^[76]

On offense, Jordan featured a versatile offensive game. He could aggressively slash to the basket and seemed to draw fouls from his opponents at will: his 8,772 free throw attempts are 9th all time.^[77] Jordan could also post up his opponents and score with his trademark fadeaway jumpshot, using his jumping ability to "fade away" from block attempts. Hubie Brown stated that this move alone made him nearly unstoppable.^[78] Jordan's 5.2 assists per game^[5] also prove his willingness to defer to his teammates. Finally, in later years, he extended his shooting range to become a three-point threat, rising from a low 9 / 52 rate (.173) in his rookie year into a stellar 111 / 260 (.427) rate in 1996-97 season.^[5] Jordan was also a very good rebounder (6.2 per game)^[5] for a guard.

On defense, Jordan's contributions were equally impressive. His 2,514 steals are second all-time behind John Stockton.^[79] In addition he set records for blocked shots by a guard,^[80] and combined this with his ball-thieving ability to become a standout defensive player. Jerry West often said that for all Jordan's statistics and records he was most amazed that Jordan was "the best defensive player in the league."^[81]

Michael Jordan's basketball talent was clear from his rookie season.^[7]^[8] His dunks, tenacious defense and scoring ability amazed fans and opponents.^[7]^[8] After Jordan poured in a playoff-record 63 points against the Boston Celtics in 1986, Celtics superstar Larry Bird described him as "God disguised as Michael Jordan."^[13]

Jordan led the NBA in scoring 10 seasons, tying Wilt Chamberlain for consecutive scoring titles with seven in a row, but was also a fixture on the NBA All-Defensive Team, making the roster nine times. Jordan also holds the top career and playoff scoring averages of 30.1 and 33.4 points per game,^[2] respectively. By 1998, the season of his Finals-winning shot against the Jazz, he was well known throughout the league as one of the game's best clutch performers. In the regular season, Jordan was the Bulls' primary threat in the final seconds of a close game and in the playoffs, Jordan would always demand the ball at crunch time. Jordan's total of 5,987 points in the playoffs is the highest in NBA history.^[82]

With five regular-season MVPs, six Finals MVPs, and three All-Star MVPs, Jordan is perhaps the most decorated player ever to play in the NBA. Jordan finished among the top three in regular-season MVP voting a record 10 times. Jordan was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996.

Many of Jordan's contemporaries label Jordan as the greatest men's professional basketball player of all time.^[81] An ESPN survey of journalists, athletes and other sports figures ranked Jordan the greatest athlete of the 20th century, above icons such as Babe Ruth and Muhammad Ali.^[2] Jordan placed second to Babe Ruth in the Associated Press's own list of 20th century athletes.^[83] Since 1983, Jordan has also appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated 49 times, more than any other athlete.^[84]

Jordan's athletic leaping ability, highlighted in his back-to-back slam dunk contest championships in 1987 and 1988, is credited by many with having influenced a generation of young players.^[85]^[86]^[87] In addition, commentators have dubbed a number of next-generation players "the next Michael Jordan" upon their entry to the NBA, such as Grant Hill, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.^[88]^[89]^[90]

Personal life

Jordan is the fourth of five children. He has two older brothers, Larry Jordan and James R. Jordan, Jr., one older sister, Deloris, and a younger sister, Roslyn. He married Juanita Jordan in September 1989, and they have two sons, Jeffrey Michael and Marcus James, and a daughter, Jasmine. Michael and Juanita filed for divorce on January 4, 2002, citing irreconcilable differences, but reconciled shortly thereafter. They filed for divorce again on December 29, 2006 commenting that the decision was made "mutually and amicably".^[91]^[92]

On July 21, 2006, a Cook County, Illinois judge determined that Jordan did not owe a former lover, Karla Knafel, $5 million.^[93] Knafel claimed Jordan promised her that amount for remaining silent and agreeing not to file a paternity suit after Knafel learned she was pregnant in 1991. A DNA test showed Jordan was not the father of the child.^[93] Knafel's attorney, Michael Hannafan, said his client also will appeal this latest ruling.

Jordan currently lives in Highland Park, Illinois,^[91] and both of his sons attend Loyola Academy, a private Roman Catholic high school located in Wilmette, Illinois.^[94] Jeffrey is a member of the 2007 Graduating Class, while Marcus is a member of the 2009 class. Jordan's brother James R. Jordan, Jr. was the Command Sergeant Major of the 35th Signal Brigade of the XVIII Airborne Corps in the U.S. Army.^[95]

Media figure and business interests

Jordan is one of the most marketed sports figures in history. He has been a major spokesman for such brands as Nike, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, Gatorade, Hanes, McDonald's, Ball Park Franks, Rayovac, Wheaties, and MCI. Jordan also has appeared in several campaigns for the clothing company Hanes.^[96] Jordan has had a long relationship with Gatorade, appearing in over 20 commercials for the company since 1991.^[96]^[97] Most famously he appeared in their "Like Mike" commercials in which a song was sung by children wishing to be like Jordan.^[96]

Nike created a signature shoe for him, called the Air Jordan. One of Jordan's more popular commercials for the shoe involved Spike Lee playing the part of Mars Blackmon. In the commercials Lee, as Blackmon, attempted to find the source of Jordan's abilities and became convinced that "it's gotta be the shoes."^[96] The hype and demand for the shoes even brought on a spate of "shoe-jackings" where people were robbed of their sneakers at gunpoint. Subsequently Nike spun off the Jordan line into its own company named appropriately the "Jordan Brand." The company features an impressive list of athletes and celebrities as endorsers.^[98]^[99] The brand has also sponsored college sports programs such as those of North Carolina, Cincinnati, Cal, St. John's, Georgetown, and North Carolina A & T.

Jordan also has been connected with the Looney Tunes cartoon characters. A Nike commercial shown during the 1993 Super Bowl XXVII featured Jordan and Bugs Bunny playing basketball against a group of Martian characters. The Super Bowl commercial inspired the 1996 live action/animated movie Space Jam, which starred Michael and Bugs in a fictional story set during his first retirement. They have subsequently appeared together in several commercials for MCI.

Jordan's income from the endorsements is estimated to reach several hundred million dollars. In addition, when Jordan's power at the ticket gates was at its highest point the Bulls regularly sold out every game they played in, whether home or away.^[100] Due to this, Jordan set records in player salary by signing annual contracts worth in excess of $30 million US dollars per season.^[101]

In 1946, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed, organizing the top professional teams and leading to greater popularity of the professional game. The first game was played in Toronto, Canada between the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers on November 1, 1946. An upstart organization, the American Basketball Association, emerged in 1967 and briefly threatened the NBA's dominance until the rival leagues merged in 1976. Today the NBA is the top professional basketball league in the world in terms of popularity, salaries, talent, and level of competition.

The NBA has featured many famous players, including George Mikan, the first dominating "big man"; ball-handling wizard Bob Cousy and defensive genius Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics; Wilt Chamberlain, who originally played for the barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters; all-around stars Oscar Robertson and Jerry West; more recent big men Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone; playmaker John Stockton; crowd-pleasing forward Julius Erving; and the three players who many credit with ushering the professional game to its highest level of popularity: Larry Bird, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and Michael Jordan.

The NBA-backed Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) began 1997. Though it had an insecure opening season, several marquee players (Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Sue Bird among others) helped the league's popularity and level of competition. Other professional women's basketball leagues in the United States, such as the American Basketball League (1996-1998), have folded in part because of the popularity of the WNBA.

In 2001, the NBA formed a developmental league, the NBDL. The league currently has 8 teams, but will add 7 more for the 2006-2007 season.

In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education student and instructor at YMCA Training School^[1] (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals^[2].

Naismith's handwritten diaries discovered by his granddaughter in Spring 2006 indicate that he was nervous about the new game he had invented, which incorporated rules from a Canadian children's game called "Duck on a Rock", as many had failed before it. Naismith called the new game 'Basket Ball'.^[3]

The first official basketball game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players, on a court just half the size of a present-day National Basketball Association (NBA) court. "Basket ball", the name suggested by one of Naismith's students, was popular from the beginning.

Women's basketball began in 1892 at Smith College when Senda Berenson, a physical education teacher, modified Naismith's rules for women.

Basketball's early adherents were dispatched to YMCAs throughout the United States, and it quickly spread through the USA and Canada. By 1895, it was well established at several women's high schools. While the YMCA was responsible for initially developing and spreading the game, within a decade it discouraged the new sport, as rough play and rowdy crowds began to detract from the YMCA's primary mission. However, other amateur sports clubs, colleges, and professional clubs quickly filled the void. In the years before World War I, the Amateur Athletic Union and the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (forerunner of the NCAA) vied for control over the rules for the game.

Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown, and it was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle, searching for a ball that would be more visible to players and spectators alike, introduced the orange ball that is now in common use.

Dribbling, the bouncing of the ball up and down while moving, was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a major part of the game around the 1950s as manufacturing improved the ball shape.

Basketball, netball, dodgeball, volleyball, and lacrosse are the only ball games which have been identified as being invented by North Americans. Other ball games, such as baseball and Canadian football, have Commonwealth of Nations, European, Asian or African connections.
